Union soldiers normally thought of black soldiers as less skilled than whites. Blacks normally got put into jobs like scouts, cooks, or guards. When captured by the confederate army the black soldiers often faced more dangers than a white P.O.W(Prisoner Of War). Confederate president Jefferson Davis promised that black union soldiers will be enslaved or executed immediately. The Union did attempt to keep there black soldiers out of harms way by keeping them away from the front line.
